New to pickleball or unsure of your skill level? Here's everything you need to know to get started.
How to Determine Your Skill Rating
Pickleball uses a skill rating system from 1.0 to 5.5+ to help players find appropriate competition. Self-rating is common for recreational play. Be honest with your assessment to ensure competitive and enjoyable matches.
New to the game. Learning basic rules, scoring, and fundamental strokes. Can sustain a short rally with players of similar ability.
Knows the rules and can keep score. Able to serve, return serve, and sustain a rally. Starting to approach the non-volley zone to hit volleys.
Consistent serve with moderate depth. Able to hit forehand and backhand volleys. Understands stacking and basic strategy. Can sustain longer rallies.
Consistent and reliable strokes including directional control and depth. Uses dinks, third shot drops, and volleys effectively. Good footwork and court positioning.
Mastered shot selection and can vary pace. Strong mental game and anticipation. Able to execute offensive and defensive strategies. Competes in tournaments.
Top-level play with exceptional shot-making ability. Competes at the highest levels. Can adapt to any opponent and execute all shots with precision.
Basic Rules of Pickleball
Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It's played on a badminton-sized court with a modified tennis net, using paddles and a plastic ball with holes.
